Napa, California

Set above the Napa Valley, in an area of native oak woodland and savannah, the house provides both sanctuary and inspiration for its inhabitants.

The house was conceived to provide an intense connection to the landscape while giving the homeowners a place of quiet retreat from busy work lives.
The spaces are organized in quadrants; public, private, service, and served, around a central stair. The circulation and living spaces around the stair are carefully scaled to the use, from the more grand gathering spaces to the intimate private quarters. The operable skylight over the stair aids in bringing natural daylight and passive cooling deep into the house. Each quadrant frames a unique and dramatic view of the rock, water, glade, knoll, and oak that make up the exceptional site.
