Leigh-Taylor Residence, Berkeley, CA

This new custom home was designed to fit seamlessly into the neighborhood context of early 20th century homes in the hills of Berkeley. Built in the craftsman tradition, the new 1,800 square foot home includes rough-hewn timbers set in smooth-trowel stucco, a two-story atriated common space, an open kitchen and a dining room that opens onto the garden.

The 3 bedroom, 2 bath home was designed to be built on a very tight budget. The floor plan is made up of two stacked rectangles (first & second floors) with an atrium cut into the second floor. The result is a simple cost-efficient frame that is made dramatic by the second floor mezzanine that surrounds and overlooks the first floor dining room.
