Charles Kahn

For Charles architecture was a natural synthesis of his undergraduate studies in art and psychology (BA, Harvard University, 1977). His interest in the human condition and the ways in which form and space affect personal experience naturally lead him to study architecture in the Masters program at U.C. Berkeley.

"I think that architecture needs to make a difference in people's lives. That may sound like a small goal, but I feel that successful buildings have large impacts: they set the stage for rich lives, engage our spirits, and foster a sense of well being." To make a difference after completing architecture school, Charles began literally making things - learning to swing a hammer and build houses that reflect his vision.

Deciding to commit to architecture full-time, Charles started Kahn Design Associates in 1984. His interest in creating the stage sets for life's experiences led him from custom homes to public work, first designing restaurants and cafes, then streetscapes and shopping centers.

Much of Charles' design sensibility comes from his reaction to the cold and faceless buildings of the 1950 and 60's. His architectural response to these buildings has been to create places that are consistently warm, engaging and well integrated into their physical and social context. This approach is exemplified in the work done for clients as well as the real estate development projects he has completed on his own, including the Thornhill House, a neo-craftsman home in the Oakland Hills and the Callaj Buildings, an office complex combining contemporary design with a vintage building from the 1950s.

Above all, Charles enjoys working with people. His approach to design, problem solving, and project management is inclusive and engaging. He believes that by listening fully and respectfully to the concerns of others and responding creatively, one can find a path through even the most difficult situations. This approach has proven extremely valuable when working not only for clients, but also with city officials, neighborhood groups and other stakeholders.

Charles is a registered architect and licensed general contractor in California. He is also an Instructor and Advisor to the UC Berkeley Extension design program and is active in many organizations including the West Berkeley PAC, Architects for Social Responsibility and the Congress for the New Urbanism.
